Relations with Albania
It was 1994 when the Sovereign Order of Malta and Albania established bilateral diplomatic relations. The next year the Albanian Organization of the Order of Malta – the Order’s volunteer corps – started working in the country.
On May 10th 2011, the postal agreement between Albania and the Sovereign Order of Malta was signed during a ceremony held in the Magistral Palace in Rome. Thanks to this agreement, a regular postal service was established between the entire territory of Albania and the seats where the Order exercises its sovereign prerogatives. Signatories to the agreement were Rrok Logu, Albanian Ambassador to the Sovereign Order of Malta, and Gian Luca Chiavari, Receiver of the Common Treasure (Minister of Finance) of the Sovereign Order of Malta.
On January 22nd 2014, The President of the Republic, H.E Bujar Nishani received the Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta, H.E Stefano Palumbo, resident in Tirana who presented the Letters of Credentials.
On June 15th 2016, a cooperation agreement was signed by the Albanian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Odeta Barbullushi and by the Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Albania, Stefano Palumbo. The purpose of the agreement is to strengthen and promote the hospitaller, health care, education and disaster risk reductions projects of the Order of Malta in the country.
On 19-20 January 2016, H.M.E.H the Grand Master Fra’ Matthew Festing, H.E the Grand Chancellor and H.E the Grand Hospitallier were on an official visit to Albania. Fra’ Matthew Festing was received by the President of Albania, Bujar Nishani, the President of the Parliament, Ilir Meta and the Prime Minister, Edi Rama. During the meetings, the Albanian leaders expressed their gratitude and that of the Albanian people for the valuable contribution given by the Albanian Organisation of the Order of Malta over the last twenty years. Marking the 20th anniversary of the Order’s auxiliary organisation in Albania, Grand Master Fra’ Matthew Festing, accompanied by Albrecht Boeselager Grand Chancellor and Dominique de La Rochefoucauld-Montbel Grand Hospitaller, visited the headquarters of Malteser Albania in Shkodër, northwestern Albania, and learned more of the many projects and activities the organisation has undertaken. The Grand Master was received by the President of the Organisation Mons. Lucjan Avgustini, the Executive Director Maranaj Marku and the Organisation’s staff, volunteers and collaborators.
On November 7th 2016, the Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta Fra’ Matthew Festing, received the President of the Republic of Albania, Bujar Nishani, on an official visit, at the Magistral Palace in Rome.
On 20 November 2018, the Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta Fra’ Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto received in Rome a delegation headed by the Speaker of the Parliament, Gramoz Ruci.
