The Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta to the Republic of Albania is pleased to announce that today, during a solemn ceremony held at the Magistral Palace in Rome, the Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta, Fra’ John Dunlap, conferred the Grand Cross of the Order pro Merito Melitensi upon H.E. Ambassador Stefano Palumbo, Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to the Republic of Albania.
The distinction was awarded alongside those conferred upon the Order’s Ambassadors to Bulgaria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, North Macedonia, Romania and Ukraine, in recognition of their longstanding commitment to the diplomatic mission of the Sovereign Order of Malta.
In his opening address, the Grand Chancellor, Riccardo Paternò di Montecupo, recalled the fundamental values underpinning the Order’s humanitarian diplomacy, highlighting neutrality as a moral choice that preserves dialogue while remaining faithful to truth and justice. He also emphasized the unique mission of the Order’s diplomatic network, whose purpose is not to pursue national interests but to bear witness to the principles and humanitarian values that have guided the Order for over nine centuries.
The Grand Cross pro Merito Melitensi is one of the Sovereign Order of Malta’s highest distinctions. Established in 1920, it is awarded to individuals who have rendered outstanding service and brought honour and prestige to the Order through their dedication and commitment.
The Embassy warmly congratulates Ambassador Stefano Palumbo on this prestigious recognition, which reflects his unwavering service to the Sovereign Order of Malta and his steadfast commitment to strengthening its humanitarian and diplomatic mission in Albania.
